CMA CGM Resumes Suez Canal Routes

Key Points:
  • CMA CGM resumes strategic Suez Canal routes in 2026.
  • Significant roundtrip time reduction.
  • Improved maritime security in Red Sea.

CMA CGM, a French shipping giant, will resume select Suez Canal transits in January 2026, enhancing maritime operations amidst previous geopolitical disruptions.

This decision indicates improved security, potentially stabilizing maritime routes and reducing transit times, vital for global trade efficiency.

CMA CGM is set to resume significant shipping routes through the Suez Canal starting January 2026. This decision follows improvements in maritime security that previously influenced shifts in shipping patterns.

The French shipping company aims to optimize logistics by shortening round trips from 91 to 77 days. CMA CGM becomes the first major carrier to commit fully to east-west loops in this region.

This strategic move benefits global trade by enhancing security and operational efficiency. It signals recovery from past disruptions related to regional conflicts, specifically in Houthi areas.

The changes are anticipated to stabilize spot rates, reduce fuel costs, and bolster capacity on critical Asia-US and India-US corridors by late 2026.

Shipping giants such as Maersk and ZIM remain cautious, highlighting the enduring geopolitical risks. They express concerns about maritime insurance, and the necessity for ongoing evaluations.

Peter Sand, Chief Analyst at Xeneta, suggests that while this resumption is noteworthy, it does not yet reflect pre-2023 transit levels. He emphasizes improvements while recognizing the limited scale compared to previous operations.
